Like most ebook reader screen manufacturers, LG has kept its eye on the flexible e-paper pie. Now, however, the firm recently announced that its 6 inch high resolution EPD (E-Paper Display) is finally in full production, and should be in ebook readers shipped to Europe within a few months time.
LG’s new plastic EPD, is said to be the world’s first flexible screen in mass production. It proudly takes the shape of a plastic screen that is only 0.027 inches (0.7 millimeters) thick – That’s about 2/3 of the thickness of the standard glass EPD screens currently out there. At 0.49 oz (14 grams) in weight, the new display is less than half the weight of the current glass made alternatives. However, the flexibility of the screen is what makes the plastic E-paper display so revolutionary. This flexible screen can bent as much as 40 degrees from the plane of the display, and can survive blows from a small hammer! it can even be repeatedly dropped from a height of 4.92 ft (1.5 meters) – Talk about rugged!
“With the world’s first plastic EPD, LG Display has proved its reputation once again for its innovation and leadership with a product we believe will significantly help popularize the eBook reader market,” said Mr. Sang, leader of Operations for LG’s Mobile Display/OLED division. “Based on our success in mass-producing plastic E-Paper Displays, we are excited as we look to apply concepts from this experience to future innovation like the plastic OLED and flexible displays.”
LG says it managed to adapt conventional LCD manufacturing processes to the production of the new e-paper display by decreasing the process temperature of the LCD process to a level that the EPD could tolerate. The new display will be shipped to Chinese device manufacturers who hope to produce and ship new products to Europe as soon as, according to LGs press release, “the beginning of next month.”
